หน้ากากผีตาโขนที่ถูกนำมาใช้ในรายการประกวด Isan Drag Queen นั้น ถูกนำมาจากพิพิธภัณฑ์ผีตาโขนของวัดแห่งหนึ่ง ซึ่งช่วยเชื่อมโยงการแสดงสมัยใหม่เข้ากับมรดกทางวัฒนธรรมที่หยั่งรากลึก

ในอดีต ช่างฝีมือชาวไทยมักถ่ายทอดเรื่องราวทางศาสนาผ่านภาพจิตรกรรมฝาผนังตามวัดวาอาราม โดยเขียนภาพทศชาติชาดก หรือเรื่องราวใน 10 อดีตชาติของพระพุทธเจ้า ซึ่งในบรรดาชาดกทั้งหมด "มหาเวสสันดรชาดก" ถือเป็นเรื่องที่มีความสำคัญอย่างยิ่ง โดยมักมีฉากที่เขียนภาพชาวเมืองและเหล่าดวงวิญญาณสัญลักษณ์ต่างๆ มารวมตัวกันเพื่อต้อนรับการกลับคืนสู่พระนครของพระเวสสันดร งานศิลปะเชิงทัศนศิลป์เหล่านี้ยังคงทำหน้าที่ส่งต่อเรื่องราว และอิทธิพลในการจดจำรวมถึงการตีความเรื่องเล่าเหล่านี้มาจนถึงปัจจุบัน

ตามความเชื่อท้องถิ่นของชาวอีสาน หลังจากเทศกาลผีตาโขนสิ้นสุดลง ตามประเพณีดั้งเดิมจะมีการนำชุดและหน้ากากผีตาโขนไปลอยลงสู่แม่น้ำ ซึ่งเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของพิธีกรรมเพื่อลอยความทุกข์โศกโรคภัยและเปิดรับสิ่งใหม่ๆ เข้ามา แต่ในเรื่องนี้ ทางวัดได้เก็บรักษาชุดเหล่านั้นขึ้นมาจากน้ำ แล้วนำมาจัดแสดงไว้ภายในพิพิธภัณฑ์ เพื่อเปิดโอกาสให้ผู้คนได้ศึกษา เรียนรู้ อบอุ่นหัวใจ และส่งต่อคุณค่านี้ไปยังคนรุ่นหลัง

ด้วยกระบวนการนี้ พิพิธภัณฑ์จึงไม่ได้เป็นเพียงแค่สถานที่จัดเก็บของเก่าเท่านั้น แต่ยังทำหน้าที่เป็นศูนย์เรียนรู้ทางวัฒนธรรม ที่ช่วยสืบสานและถ่ายทอดความหมายอันลึกซึ้งที่อยู่เบื้องหลังประเพณีผีตาโขน ให้อยู่คู่กับชุมชนอีสานต่อไป

In the past, Thai artisans often expressed religious stories through temple murals, illustrating the Buddha’s ten past lives, known as the Jataka tales. Among them, the Vessantara Jataka is especially significant, with scenes depicting townspeople and symbolic spirit figures gathering to welcome the prince back to the city. These visual traditions continue to shape how such stories are remembered and reinterpreted today.

According to local Isan beliefs, after the Phi Ta Khon festival concludes, the costumes are traditionally floated down a river as part of a ritual to release misfortune and invite renewal. In this story, the temple later retrieves these costumes and preserves them within a museum setting, allowing them to be studied, appreciated, and passed on to future generations.

Through this process, the museum becomes more than a place of storage—it serves as a cultural learning center, helping to sustain and share the meaning behind the Phi Ta Khon tradition within the Isan community.
